Nicene Creed

Suffering

Turn to any page of the Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska and you find spiritual gems. Like this one, in which Jesus says:

Who can measure the extent of my goodness? For you I descended from heaven to earth; for you I allowed myself to be nailed to the cross; for you I let my Sacred Heart be pierced with a lance, thus opening wide the source of mercy for you. Come, then, with trust to draw graces from this fountain. I never reject a contrite heart. Your misery has disappeared in the depths of My mercy. Do not argue with Me about your wretchedness. You will give me pleasure if you hand over to me all your troubles and griefs. I shall heap upon you the treasures of My grace (1485).

When we face intense suffering, we have the tendency to argue with God about our misery. We say, "Why me?" or "This isn't fair."'

We fuel our own fears by thinking that maybe God isn't good. If He were, why would He allow us to experience pain?

Consumed by our own misery, we tend to forget that in this fallen world, everyone has to suffer.

God, especially, suffered.

He loved us so much that He came to earth to show us how to suffer well. Indeed, His most painful moment — the death of His Son on the Cross — brought forth more good than any moment in history. His suffering redeemed the world from sin and death.

In the same way, when God allows us to suffer, He intends our good. But He needs our trust. He needs us to suffer well.

The sooner and more ardently we place our trust in Him amidst our pain, the bigger and faster He will deliver.

The Lord says to your heart and mine today: I dare you to trust in My unfathomable mercy, especially in your most excruciating pain. I want all of your misery, from the little sufferings of the day to the wretched trials piercing your heart. Never doubt my goodness — trust!

My Prayer: Jesus, when life weighs me down and I feel like I can't carry on a moment longer, grant me the grace to believe in your goodness. Let me never fear nor rebel from You. Instead, help me to trust relentlessly in Your Divine Mercy and receive the treasures of graces You want to heap upon me.
